Scientists in collaboration with scientists from the infamous city of Wuhan have identified another coronavirus in the Republic of South Africa under the name NeoCoV.
It is related to MERS-CoV, which is the cause of the Middle East respiratory syndrome, cases of its spread were recorded in 2015. According to various sources, the mutating virus originated in bats, after which it passed to camels, and then to humans.
According to a preprint from the bioRxiv website, Wuhan University researchers found that the new virus and related PDF-2180-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 use several types of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2, ACE2) to infect the same mice. The infection can use a similar principle for human ACE2.
The text of the preprint indicates that the virus is highly effective in infecting cells in the human body that express ACE2. At the same time, antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV are useless against it, so there is a risk of human infection with this new strain.
