Developer Zhuowei Zhang was able to change the default font of Apple's mobile OS without access to the file system. Earlier, jailbreak was released for iOS 15 and 16.

Zhuowei Zhang shared his success on his Twitter page, where he posted screenshots with several fonts. It should be noted that Apple makes it possible to change the font purely on the clock on the lock display. The enthusiast managed to change the fonts using his own utility that uses the CVE-2022-46689 exploit. This exploit is available in iOS 16.1.2 and later and allows programs to execute arbitrary code with kernel-level privileges. In iOS 16, this feature was removed, so this method will not work on updated iPhones.

As examples, Zhuowei Zhang changed San Francisco's system font to DejaVu Sans Condensed, Serif, Mono, and Choco Cooky. It is curious that the latter was previously used as a standard on Samsung devices. The developer assured that his method is safe, since all the changes made are removed when the smartphone is rebooted. But he still advises to back up the data.

Created by Zhuowei Zhang, the utility does not require a jailbreak. However, installing it is not so easy. To do this, you will need to compile the application in Xcode yourself or manually sign the IPA file with a developer certificate. The source code can be found on GitHub.
