Previously, a number of managers and developers of the Cupertino brand spoke negatively about the possibility of introducing a touch display on branded laptops. But, judging by the issued patents, the company did not abandon this idea.

Previously, Steve Jobs, Jony Ive, and Tim Cook spoke out against the appearance of a touch screen in the MacBook. All of them in different years in one form or another said that such a decision would be inconvenient. Craig Federighi, vice president of software development, said in 2017 that introducing touch functionality for screens designed to work with a mouse pointer would jeopardize the user experience. It is curious that in October 2022, in response to a question from journalists, Federighi did not answer so clearly.

In August 2020, Apple filed patent documentation for the iMac Touch. The device is something similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro: a monoblock with a swivel stand. The mechanism provides for tilting the monitor using a touch display.

In 2021, Apple patented another similar idea. iMac with a full glass front panel in one version was supposed to be equipped with a touch screen and touch pads on both sides of the keyboard.
In the same 2021, the Cupertinos patented a MacBook prototype with a pair of displays, one of which should occupy the keyboard and touchpad area. To implement a virtual keyboard, this area, of course, must be made touch-sensitive.
