There was no clever "Director" in Left 4 Dead. A former Valve screenwriter spoke about this
Everything turned out to be much simpler than gamers thought.

Ex-Valve screenwriter Chet Falisek, in an interview with the Game Developer website, spoke about the details of the creation of the popular cooperative shooter with zombies. During the conversation, he revealed an interesting secret that is connected with the AI of opponents.

In L4D, as many people know, there is a system called “Director”. Using AI, it reads various indicators of players and characters, including the amount of health, remaining ammunition, gamer skills and other parameters. In accordance with them, the number of opponents is regulated and their location is chosen. Thus, the AI makes each new passage of the level unique, because users never know where to expect a zombie attack.

But after 15 years from the release of the shooter, it turned out that the “Director” functions completely differently than everyone initially thought. Falisek said that this is not AI, but a simple random number generator. According to the screenwriter, the idea of advanced intelligence is the most ingenious in the history of L4D. The properties of a mega-complex system were attributed to the random number generator, and even after many years no one noticed the supply.
