Ex-Rockstar developer explains why there was no multiplayer in GTA 3
The well-known Obbe Vermeil, who worked as the technical director of Rockstar Games, again shared interesting details about the development of games in the GTA franchise.
This time Vermeil told why the third GTA did not have a multiplayer mode, although it was present in the first GTA. According to him, the creators had such a desire, they even already wrote the code and gameplay base. However, later they had to abandon multiplayer due to the impressive amount of work. They also wanted to add multiplayer to Vice City, but the developers failed here too. San Andreas also had to refrain from introducing a multiplayer mode, because this was the only way to keep up with the release of the game on consoles, so only the cooperative mode was left.
It is worth noting that 1.5 years after its release, GTA 3 received a custom modification, Multi Theft Auto, which added multiplayer to the game. Later this modification was released for Vice City and San Andreas. The second also acquired a separate well-known mod, San Andreas Multiplayer (SAMP).
