Seagate has announced the release of a PCIe hard drive operating over the NVMe protocol. The presentation took place at the Open Compute Project Summit event.
The created HDD prototype has a proprietary Seagate controller that supports the three most common protocols SAS, SATA and NVMe. The manufacturer is confident that such universalization will facilitate the work of not only data centers, but also help ordinary users in assembling more productive PCs.
At the moment, even the latest HDDs cannot use 100% of the bandwidth potential of even a single PCIe 2.0 lane. This problem will be solved in future hard drives, where there will be a multi-actuator system for positioning the magnetic heads. This should have a positive effect on the data transfer speed, but the SAS and SATA bandwidth will not be enough to fully unleash the disk's capabilities. Therefore, the introduction of PCIe is seen as a step in the right direction.
In June of this year, NVM Express introduced the specification of the NVMe 2.0 protocol, according to which it will support HDD.
Seagate expects their development to become available to key partners next September. Sales should start in 2024. Judging by the latest plans of the company, the disks will receive a volume of 30-40 TB, they will also be created using the technology of thermomagnetic recording with one or two drives.
