IBM is actively moving towards realizing a quantum computer. So, the company's engineers told about the development process of a 127-qubit quantum processor called Eagle. According to the creators, the processor is a pioneer of its kind, since there is no way to simulate it with an ordinary supercomputer.

Quantum computers do not operate on ordinary bits, but on qubits. If the bits include the discrete state "0" or "1", then the qubits are superposition, that is, the phenomenon of location in two states at the same time, but only before this state can not be measured. IBM has been developing in this area for a long time. In 2016, the company gives access to its own quantum computing cloud Quantum Experience. Last August, the firm developed a 27-qubit processor with the industry's largest Quantum Volume of 64 units.

Eagle has an updated architecture with a complex configuration. The design created by IBM is called a breakthrough design, since the controls are located at different physical levels, and the qubits are at the same. This configuration allows an impressive increase in computing power.

IBM did not disclose the Quantum Volume parameter for this chip. In December, Eagle will be available on the IBM cloud service for the Quantum Network's privileged users.

Next year, IBM is set to introduce 433 and 1121 qubit processors, which will give them the opportunity to achieve the quantum advantage. Two years ago, researchers at Google already reported overcoming this limit, but were criticized by representatives of IBM.

Previously, IBM had plans to release a variant of such a commercial computer by 2023. Whether they are going to realize their plan now is unclear. In turn, Google wants to develop its own such device by 2029.

There is an opinion that quantum computing devices, by going beyond traditional architectures, will be able, in contrast to supercomputers, to understand global problems. In particular, quantum computing will allow searching for new drugs, discovering new materials, influencing the development of artificial intelligence, optimizing logistics, and much more.
