At CES 2022, Sony at its presentation confirmed the official name of the future augmented reality headset. A new part of the Horizon game franchise was also announced.
The headset has received the uncomplicated name of PlayStation VR2. Sony presented the logo of its product, but the device itself was not shown. However, some of the features and technical specifications of the device have been confirmed.
PlayStation VR2
The development of the second generation of the VR headset became known back in February last year, and in March the controllers for the device were also shown. Now the data of leaks from the summer closed presentation of the developers have been confirmed. So, the device will receive OLED displays with 4K resolution, an angle of view of 110 degrees (the previous model had 100) and a refresh rate of 90/120 Hz. Also, the device will have a tactile response, an assessment of eye movement and the so-called "foveal rendering", which ensures the rendering of the image in the best quality in the center of the field of view.
The headset uses the Inside Out approach, when all sensors for monitoring movements are integrated into the gadget itself. This eliminates the need for any auxiliary elements.
PS VR2 is being developed for use with the PlayStation 5 console. Connection to the console will be via a single cable without adapters.
New part of the Horizon series
The next chapter in the Horizon franchise, subtitled Call of the Mountain, is being developed exclusively for PS VR2. The new part will follow the Forbidden West coming out this February. A completely new protagonist awaits players in Call of the Mountain, although familiar characters from the series will still appear. The project is being created by Guerilla and Firesprite. From the promotional materials of the game there is only a teaser, the release date is still unknown.
PS VR2 Release Date
A release date for the headset has yet to be announced. It is assumed that it will be released no earlier than the end of December 2022, but most likely the release will be made even later.
