IKEA announces smart home control device and new Home app
The Swedish company will release the DIRIGERA smart home control center. Together with the application, it will be able to work with various smart gadgets, including third-party ones.
The device DIRIGERA (translated from Swedish as "to guide") has a height of 2.7 cm and a diameter of 11.2. Compared to the previous TRADFRI hub model, the device is smaller. The control center housing has USB-C and Ethernet connectors, and the hub also integrates Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Thread technologies, which allows it to act as a bridge for several networks used by connected objects in the house.
DIRIGERA and the Home Smart utility currently only support the Matter standard. This allows the control center to interact with all systems developed by the Swedish company itself and third-party solutions that support the Matter standard with the necessary certificate of conformity.
The release of the device and application will take place in October. In 2023, the company plans to present remote access functionality to facilitate work with smart systems. In the future, IKEA is going to develop a cloud infrastructure so that the owner of the equipment can control the smart home remotely.
IKEA also plans to produce more furniture and interior items with smart features that are compatible with smart home systems. So, in the near future, built-in speakers and wireless memory will appear in company stores.
IKEA began working on creating solutions for smart homes in 2014, and five years later, the Home Start direction has become one of the priorities for the company. The DIRIGERA hub was designed from scratch using the experience of previous developments. In the future, it will be able to integrate all smart home systems from the brand's catalog, including lighting and sound equipment, blinds and air purifiers.
