Teroshi Shimizu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Semiconductor, expressed his opinion on the fate of mobile photography.
The top manager is confident that after a couple of years, cameras on flagship smartphones will be able to fully compete with the photo capabilities of digital SLR cameras. Progress will be made by improving the aperture of mobile sensors, improving the structural design of sensors, and using AI to connect pixels into a single picture. In addition, the head of the Sony division is confident that by the end of the decade, camera phones will be able to record videos in 8K format and will have the ability to ultra-fast continuous shooting, like a full-fledged camera.
By next year, the Japanese company intends to expand its production facilities by 60% and increase the production of image sensors for devices of its own brand and for other manufacturers.
