Xiaomi has long abandoned physical proximity sensors in its smartphones, for which it is criticized by users, since virtual sensors are unstable. To solve this problem in the new flagship devices 12 Pro Dimensity Edition and 12S Ultra, the Chinese teamed up with AI software developer Elliptic Labs from Norway.
The Norwegians have developed a virtual AI sensor called the AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform. It is necessary to turn off the display when the mobile device approaches the ear during a conversation and to avoid accidental clicks when the device is in your pocket. Prior to this, Elliptic Labs developed such a sensor for Xiaomi 11T. The transition from a hardware sensor to a virtual one saves on the production of smartphones and eliminates the hypothetical risks of component shortages, which is relevant for many manufacturers today.
Curiously, the Chinese company did not mention the use of the AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform in the 12S and 12S Pro smartphones, so it can be assumed that a different solution was used for them.
