The Nokia 808 Pureview camera phone was released in 2012. At the time of release, it had one of the most advanced cameras on the market. The author of the WillitbeatNokia channel decided to compare the photo capabilities of the veteran with the new iPhone 14 Pro.

During the comparison, images from both devices were used in various scenarios: day, night, full resolution, and photos using digital zoom. The results may surprise any user.

The device from Nokia has only one camera sensor, so the author, when testing, used only one similar sensor on the iPhone without using a wide-angle sensor and a telephoto lens. The characteristics of smartphone camera modules are as follows: iPhone 14 Pro is equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor with optical stabilization (1/1.28", f/1.8), while Nokia 808 has a 41-megapixel module (1/1.2", f/2.4). As can be seen from the characteristics, the devices differ in sensor sizes and aperture. Apple's smartphone also has OIS and advanced photo processing algorithms.

In auto mode, the iPhone took 12 MP shots, while Nokia took 8 MP. However, up close, you can see the more natural-looking petals, while the iPhone photo shows the flower more sharply.

On the second series of images in the daytime, I did not reveal a clear leader. On the device from Apple, a lighter photo turned out, but upon closer examination, it is clear that the algorithms unnecessarily embellish small details. This is not the case with Nokia.

In twilight conditions, the iPhone camera performs better by brightening dark areas and removing noise.

Another example of a photo taken in low light shows that Nokia is inferior to the competitor in terms of software processing of night images and, probably, in terms of a small aperture size. This is most noticeable in the sand: on the iPhone it is detailed, and on the 808 Pureview it is very blurry.

The next photo example is daytime conditions with a 2x zoom. Here the main advantage of Nokia is revealed - high-quality detailing in normal lighting. At the same time, there are no traces of processing here. The iPhone 14 Pro tries to move out by increasing the detail, but this reduces the realism of the picture.

In full resolution, the iPhone photo shows that it has become less “watercolor”, but even with this the details are blurred. 808, in turn, shows better detail, although the color reproduction of the device from Apple is better.

According to the author, both smartphones received the same scores in the test. The Cupertino device produces better photos taken in low light conditions, while the details in daylight conditions are higher on the Nokia even with an 8 MP sensor. In general, we can say that the 808 Pureview was ahead of its time in terms of photo capabilities.
