Insider and developer Kuba Wojciechowicz posted information about camera improvements for upcoming Google devices on his Twitter page. In the Google Camera Go program, he found references to future Pixel 8 models.
The improvements include the introduction of staggered HDR on the Pixel 8 camera, thanks to the presence of the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 sensor. While Google's HDR makes it possible to take a sequence of five short photos before pressing the shutter button and providing a slow shutter speed, the South Korean company's stepped HDR offers a different method.
So, the ISOCELL GN2 sensor allows you to capture three separate exposures (short, medium and long) in almost instantaneous sequence. Stepped HDR then combines the exposures to form the final photo. The old Google sensor has no intermediate exposure. When the ISOCELL GN2 sensor was unveiled, Samsung claimed that their HDR was capable of delivering improved detail and a brighter color gamut compared to the ISOCELL GN1's real-time HDR feature. Also, staggered HDR is much faster.
The addition of the ISOCELL GN2 sensor to the Pixel 8 line of smartphones will make it possible to improve photo quality in low light conditions and improve autofocus performance through Dual Pixel Pro technology.
