Not so long ago, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the authors of Unreal and the first games of the Gears of War franchise of unfairly extracting players' money. According to the commission, the company used a variety of design tricks and a cunning interface in such a way that children could conduct transactions without parental consent.
As a result, Epic Games has lost the ability to charge gamers without additional consent. Also, developers can’t just ban accounts for disputes about purchases in their colorful “royal battle”.
The court decision between Epic Games and the FTC states that the studio must pay a $245 million fine. Also, developers should fix the design of the in-game store and remove the confusing refund system. Part of the funds will be returned to the players, but the list of victims is not too large.
