The company has officially paused the development of the racing franchise to focus resources on creating a shooter.

EA Studios CEO Vince Zampella confirmed that a new part of the racing series will not be released anytime soon, and the Criterion Games team, previously responsible for Need for Speed, is now fully engaged in working on a new shooter.

The suspension of work on the series also means that Need for Speed Unbound will no longer receive content updates. EA noted that last year they paid special attention to community feedback to understand what players expect from future projects in the series. The developers assure that when Need for Speed returns, it will be a new and fresh take on the franchise.

The media noted that the pause between game releases will be the longest in the history of the series - the first time since 1994. The last game remains Need for Speed Unbound, released in December 2022. Despite positive reviews, the game failed to achieve commercial success, and after its release, several key developers left Criterion Games.
