At the second fall presentation of Apple, the updated MacBook Pro laptops became the headliners of the event. New items received several changes compared to their predecessors.
New processors M1 Pro and Max
The MacBook Pro will ship with two chip options, the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. These processes are the company's own development, they are created on the basis of the 5 nm process technology. Chipsets will increase device performance by 3.7x, increase graphics processing speed by 13x, and provide 11x faster machine learning.
In the base configuration, the M1 Pro chip has six powerful and two energy-efficient cores, a 14-core GPU and 200 GB / s memory bandwidth. The more powerful variant already includes ten CPU cores, of which eight are high-performance ones, and the same graphics. The M1 Max processor, in turn, can include 24 or 32 graphics cores and a bandwidth of 400 GB / s. Additional power for graphics processing will be provided by separate ProRes and Neural Engine processors.
In standard configurations, laptops will receive 16 GB of RAM, expandable for 32 and 64 GB, depending on the specific chipset. The internal storage can be up to 8 TB with a read speed of 7.4 GB / s. Declared support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Also, the processors will provide impressive autonomy by increasing energy efficiency by 70%.
Updated design and screens
The presented devices will be equipped with displays on 14 "or 16", and previously there was no 14-inch model in the line. Body materials remain the same, as are the Silver and Space Gray color options. The dimensions of the model with a 14 "screen are 31.26 x 22.12 x 1.55 cm and weighs 1.6 kg, and the 16-inch model weighs 2.2 kg and measures 35.57 x 24.81 x 1.68 cm.
The screens have a Liquid Retina XDR matrix and support adaptive ProMotion technology with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Thanks to the reduced bezels, the screens have become larger, and a "bang" appeared at the location of the webcam. The screen resolution of the 16-inch model has increased to 3456 × 2234 pixels, and the younger device has up to 3024 × 1964, the pixel density per inch for all laptops is 254 ppi.
The backlighting of the screens has also been improved, now the average brightness is up to 1000 cd / m², but it can reach up to 1600 cd / m². The use of mini-LED made it possible to increase the contrast ratio up to 1,000,000: 1.
Keyboard
As for the keyboard, the manufacturer has eliminated controversial design features that caused problems for users. The first detail that catches your eye when looking at the bottom of the laptop is the lack of a Touch Bar. Now, in the place of its former location, there is a classic row of keys. There is also a backlight and a large Force Touch trackpad.
Ports
Laptops received interfaces such as HDMI, Thunderbolt, an SD card reader on one side, and two more Thunderbolt and Audio Jack 3.5 mm on the other. The magnetic MagSafe 3 charging connector is also back. This set of ports will delight users, as previous models only had two or four Thunderbolt connectors and a headphone jack.
The M1 Pro and Max processors are powerful enough to connect 2 or 3 Apple Pro Display XDRs with 4K resolution.
Cameras and Sound
Improvements have been made to the webcam: now it has an f / 2.0 aperture and 4-element optics. Image processing will be provided by the Neural Engine. Unfortunately, the developers did not add the FaceID interface. The built-in microphones have also been upgraded to achieve a 60% lower noise floor, which will have a positive impact on recording quality. As for the speakers, they received more surround sound and support for spatial audio.
Battery
The younger model is equipped with a 70 Wh battery. This capacity is enough for 11 hours of Internet surfing or 17 hours of watching content on AppleTV branded streaming service. The kit will include charging at 67 or 96 watts.
The premium devices received a 100 Wh battery. This is enough for 14 hours of surfing the Internet or 21 hours of watching AppleTV. The battery will be charged by the included 140 W power supply.
Both versions of laptops have the ability to fast charge. So, in half an hour it will be possible to gain 50% of the charge, but the process will go through the USB-C port. The 14 "model will also need a 96W PSU.
Price
For models with 14 "screens, the manufacturer will ask for $ 1999-5899, and for devices with 16" displays, you will have to fork out $ 2499-6099. At the moment, laptops can be pre-ordered in the US, and the first devices will see their new owners on October 26th.
