Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials have created a mechanized limb that looks and functions similar to a human hand. A robotic arm is capable of changing the force of compression and performing many actions that require precision and considerable mobility. The development was named ILDA.

The limb has two dozen joints that provide fifteen degrees of freedom and finger pressure with a force of 34 Newtons. The arm is 21.8 cm long and weighs 1.1 kg. The test was carried out with the help of a robot, to the upper limb of which a prototype was attached.



During testing, the hand demonstrated sufficient strength to squeeze a tin can and hold an 18 kg dumbbell. In addition, the limb was able to cut a paper sheet with scissors, hold an egg with two fingers, and perform precise manipulations with tweezers.


To create the robotic arm, the Koreans used developments from NASA, DLR and Shadow Robot, who worked on similar limbs Robonaut, "David's Hand" and Dextrous Hand, respectively.
