The results of the competition for the creation of new encryption algorithms have been summed up. The competition was organized by the American Institute NIST.

Newly invented algorithms should provide protection against the influence of potential threats posed by quantum PCs. As a result, NIST selected four algorithms that can protect against attacks by means of quantum computers, but so far information about the four contenders for the first place has not been disclosed.

It is curious that the SIKE (Supersingular Isogeny Key Encapsulation) protocol was considered as an alternative to encryption algorithms. But this decision proved to be the most depressing way.

The fact is that SIKE was hacked during a test cyberattack in 60 minutes, and it was not a high-tech quantum computer of the future that coped with it, but an average PC with a single core in the processor. The people who completed this procedure received a $50,000 check from NIST. According to experts, the development of a truly effective way to protect against "quantum" attacks is still too far away.
