Cybercriminals have taken possession of a large 6GB of Intel confidential data. The source code for Alder Lake chips also fell into this volume.
Thanks to the leak and subsequent publication of the BIOS / UEFI code, hackers opened up the possibility of studying and finding security problems and "holes" in the protection of personal computers based on Intel Alder Lake SoCs for almost anyone. One of the representatives of the company commented on the incident. According to him, the leak will not reveal any new problems in the security system, as the vendor uses the method of obfuscation (masking) of the program code. He also encouraged end users and the community at large to report new security breaches as part of the Project Circuit Breaker campaign.
Intel did not name the specific attackers and the time of the leak. After the hack, the stolen 5.86 GB data array was posted on the GitHub portal. Experts noticed that after the theft, parts of the data on the MSR registers (microcode interface) of chips of previous generations were found. Experts also note that the discovery of the private key of the Intel Boot Guard security system will help cybercriminals develop malicious hard-to-remove programs.
Journalists from Tom's Hardware note that this leak is not the first such hack. Prior to this, Intel's main competitor, AMD, was also attacked by hackers. The attackers also stole data from companies such as Gigabyte and NVIDIA, the latter having stolen almost a terabyte of internal data.
