A team of scientists decided to test the possibilities of smart watches. For testing, they chose Samsung Galaxy Watch4, through which they conducted a bioimpedance analysis - the determination of body composition. The results were compared with high-precision methods used in medical practice.
The study involved 109 experts from Louisiana State University, the Pennington Center for Biomedical Research, and the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Data taken from the watch was compared with clinical measurements made by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and laboratory octapolar bioelectrical impedance analysis. As a result, the accuracy of measurements reached 97-98% compared with the results of scientific methods.
The authors concluded that smart watches can show an extremely accurate result of determining body composition, almost indistinguishable from measurements taken in a laboratory. Also, using smart watches, you can carry out this analysis in places remote from specialized medical centers, for example, at home.
The study also showed that the use of wearable devices led almost 60% of test participants to increase their own physical activity and reduce the time spent in a sitting position by 1 hour 8 minutes per day on average. But here it means that these figures show all smart watches and fitness trackers in general, and not just a device from Samsung.
