There has been no new information about the project to adapt the action franchise into a film for a long time. The last official news dates back to March 2023, when Netflix announced that Jon Spaihts, known for his work on the first Doctor Strange and Denis Villeneuve's Dune, would write the script.
Recently, actor Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress and called on the streaming service to speed up the film's production process. According to unconfirmed reports, Bautista may play the role of the series' protagonist Marcus Fenix.
In addition, a new part of the franchise, Gears of War: E-Day, was announced in 2024. Although the exact release date is still unknown, there are reports that the premiere may take place this year. The title is being developed on the Unreal Engine 5 for PC and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
