Although the anticipation of a threequel to the cult shooter series has long been more of a meme than a real hope, rumors about the possible end of the franchise continue to appear. Data miner Gabe Follower suggested that the creation of the new part is coming to an end and, moreover, it may be in it that the protagonist's storyline ends.
The basis for such conclusions were findings in the code of CS2 and the Source 2 engine. Among them are mentions of a zombie gorilla (first appeared in Alyx), console commands for AI, elements of dynamic navigation and deformation of objects, and other features.
A number of fans saw hints from Valve that appeared during the celebration of the HL2 anniversary. The authors demonstrated early footage from the failed third episode, and also ironically spoke about the possible ending of the story. Despite the rumors, many hoped to see the announcement of HL3 at The Game Awards 2024, which did not happen.
