According to a trusted source, eXtas1s, Electronic Arts is planning to liquidate the British studio Codemasters, which it acquired just three years ago for $1.2 billion. According to the leak, the company intends to disband the developer's main office, redistributing staff between teams working on the F1 and Need for Speed franchises, as part of a new round of layoffs that will affect about 400 specialists.

Founded in 1986, Codemasters has created iconic racing series including Colin McRae Rally, Dirt, Grid and F1 over its almost 40-year history, becoming one of the most respected developers in the genre. EA's decision to close the studio is attributed to the publisher's financial difficulties caused by the poor performance of recent releases, including EA Sports FC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

The news continues a worrying trend for Electronic Arts, which recently shuttered Cliffhanger Games and canceled a Black Panther project. If confirmed, it would be yet another example of a major publisher acquiring and then disbanding promising studios.
