Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation 5 has overtaken the PS4 in the number of monthly active users for the first time. According to the company, in 2024, both consoles shared the market approximately equally, with each of them having about 49 million active players. However, by June 2025, the PS5 became the undisputed leader, although Sony does not disclose the exact figures.

The total number of active users of both platforms has grown significantly: if in 2024 their combined number was 97 million, now it has reached 124 million. Sony President and CEO Hideaki Nishino attributes the success of the PS5 to attracting a new audience, calling the console "the perfect tool for interacting with content." According to him, PS5 owners spend an average of 25% more on games, subscriptions, and accessories compared to previous-generation users - $846 versus $669 over a five-year period.

Despite the growing popularity of the PS5, Sony continues to support the PS4 thanks to its “tiered ecosystem” — 35% of PS Plus subscribers still choose the Extra and Premium plans. The question of the next generation of consoles remains open: Nishino avoided directly commenting on the PS6, but noted that hardware development remains a priority for the company. As a reminder, the PS5 debuted on November 12, 2020, setting record launch sales in Sony history.
