Fortnite Refunds Millions of Players for Unconsidered Purchases
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continues the process of refunding Fortnite users who suffered from aggressive monetization in the popular shooter from Epic Games. At the end of June 2025, more than 969 thousand people received compensation payments in the amount of more than $ 126 million through PayPal.
These payments were the result of legal proceedings in 2022-2023, when Epic Games was fined $ 520 million. The company was accused of using psychological tricks to encourage children to make rash purchases, as well as illegally collecting personal data of minors. Of this amount, 245 million was a fine for manipulative practices in the in-game store, and 275 million - for violation of privacy.
This is already the second wave of compensation payments - in December 2024, the FTC returned $ 72 million to players. Only those users who filed the relevant complaints before July 9, 2025, were eligible for a refund. Even though several years have passed since the court decisions, the refund process is still ongoing, closing one of the most high-profile chapters in the history of video game monetization.
