OpenAI CEO Says GPT-5 Development Is Comparable in Scale to Nuclear Weapons
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his uneasy feelings about testing the new AI model GPT-5 in an interview with the podcast This Past Weekend. According to him, the development process resembled a thriller plot, and he himself experienced feelings similar to those described by participants in the Manhattan Project - a secret program to create an atomic bomb. Altman noted the frightening speed of the system and its sometimes inexplicable behavior, which made him think about possible risks.
The head of OpenAI is especially concerned about the lack of clear control mechanisms in the artificial intelligence industry. He directly stated that in this area, “there are no adults in the room” - regulation does not keep up with the rapid development of technology. This admission seems paradoxical, given that OpenAI is at the forefront of the AI race, developing one of the most powerful models in the world. This statement gave rise to questions about the transparency of the company's work and its ability to keep the situation under control.

Altman avoided specific technical details about GPT-5, preferring vague terms like “digital intelligence” and hints at “irreversible consequences.” He admitted that at times he felt as if the team had created something whose capabilities and limits were not fully understood even by its developers. Such statements are more reminiscent of the script of an apocalyptic blockbuster than the announcement of another technological product.
GPT-5 is expected to be released soon, and according to insider information, its intelligence and speed characteristics will significantly exceed previous versions.
