The Call of Duty film will take viewers into modern-day events, with filming scheduled to begin in 2026

The film industry has once again returned to the idea of bringing the Call of Duty series to the big screen. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the upcoming adaptation will be set in a contemporary setting, eschewing both historical periods and futuristic scenarios. The source also clarified that production is expected to begin as early as 2026.

The film was officially announced in September. Paramount Pictures and Activision are developing it, but they are not yet revealing details about the proposed cast or release date. According to Deadline, Peter Berg, known for Mile 22 and Lone Survivor, has been entrusted with directing, and Taylor Sheridan, who has worked on projects such as Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, will write the script.

Attempts to bring the franchise to film have been made before. In the mid-2010s, Activision wanted to launch an entire film universe, one that wouldn't duplicate the games' storylines but would retain their style and explore various conflicts from different perspectives. At the time, the company consulted with military experts, prepared numerous script drafts, and planned to produce films in the vein of the intense Black Ops or the more down-to-earth Modern Warfare. Stefano Sollima was slated to direct the first film, but the project never moved forward.

Meanwhile, the game series continues to roll out, albeit with some challenges. The latest installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, was released on November 14 and became the lowest-rated game in the series according to user reviews, with a Metacritic score of just 1.6 out of 10.
