The Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has moved forward—the film has a director

The Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has been in the works for years, and in many ways follows the story of the game itself. A possible Hollywood adaptation was first discussed last decade, and the first draft was even scrapped, but the idea was never completely abandoned. The film is slowly but surely moving forward, with important updates periodically.

Simu Liu, who is involved in the project not only as the lead but also as a producer, shared the next step toward the film's development. It was announced that the adaptation has finally secured a director. Timo Tjahjanto, known for his work on the action film Nobody 2, has taken the director's chair, which fits perfectly with the gritty and dynamic style of the source material.

Despite this, the film's release date remains unknown. The last significant development milestone was reached in October, when a preliminary version of the script was released, but filming has not yet begun.

The original Sleeping Dogs was released in 2012 and also had a difficult journey. Initially, the game was planned as a sequel to the True Crime series, titled Hong Kong, but Activision abandoned the project shortly before release. Ultimately, the developers at United Front Games found support from Square Enix, which ultimately allowed the action game to reach players and eventually gain cult status.
