The cancelled Resident Evil for Game Boy Color has been revived after a quarter of a century
In the early console era, publishers sought to cover as many platforms as possible, resulting in many titles receiving unusual and technically complex ports. Some of these versions never saw release, and this is precisely the fate that befell the original Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color. Twenty-five years later, this forgotten adaptation has finally become available.
A group of enthusiasts has restored a nearly complete build of the game, which is now available for anyone to try. The port from the 32-bit PlayStation to the 8-bit Game Boy Color radically changed the project's appearance. The graphics were simplified, the levels became less detailed, some items disappeared, and enemy behavior was reworked: zombies no longer die permanently, but instead fall to their knees, clearing the way for further progress.
The port was developed by HotGen, but the project was canceled in 2000 before it was released. For years, only fragmentary leaks of files, missing entire gameplay elements, appeared online. Now, enthusiasts have managed to assemble a version estimated to be approximately 98 percent complete—the stage the game was at when it was canceled.
