Take-Two has shut down its GTA 5 multiplayer mod after nine years of development

The developers of the popular alt:V platform, which allowed the creation of unofficial multiplayer servers for Grand Theft Auto 5, have announced the project's demise. The reason for this was pressure from publisher Take-Two Interactive, which made it clear that the only authorized platform for custom servers was FiveM, acquired by Rockstar Games in 2023.

For nearly a decade, enthusiasts used alt:V to create their own multiplayer worlds with unique rules and mechanics, significantly extending the lifespan of the iconic game. The platform was similar in functionality to FiveM, and it was this similarity that likely led to the intense scrutiny of copyright holders. The alt:V developers decided not to engage in a losing legal battle and complied with the publisher's demands.

The closure will be phased. As of March 2nd, the platform will stop accepting new servers and remove the tools for creating them. On May 4th, the list of active servers will become unavailable, and on July 6th, alt:V will cease operations completely: the client, server tools, and infrastructure will be shut down. Owners of existing projects are strongly advised to prepare in advance for migration to FiveM, which now remains the only legal alternative for creating custom multiplayer in Grand Theft Auto 5.
