Rockstar Veteran Predicts Revolution in Game Development: GTA VI Will Be Studio's Last "Expensive" Project

Obbe Vermeil, former technical director of Rockstar Games with many years of experience working on the Grand Theft Auto series, announced upcoming radical changes in the game development process. In his opinion, Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to be released in 2025, will be the studio's last project created using the traditional expensive method.
Vermeil predicts that by the time GTA VII is developed, the studio will switch to a fundamentally new production model with the active use of neural networks. Artificial intelligence will take over the generation of cutscenes, dialogues and a significant part of the game content, which will reduce the budget several times. However, the veteran emphasizes that key creative decisions will remain with people - artists and scriptwriters who will set the direction of AI and adjust its work.

"The process resembles the evolution of game engine development," Vermeil explains. "Previously, we needed dozens of programmers to implement physics and animations, now these functions are built into the engines. Neural networks are the next logical step that will change the industry, but will not replace the creative component." This transition, according to the expert, will be a natural development of the industry, where technology gradually takes over routine tasks, freeing up developers to solve more complex creative challenges. Rockstar is expected to maintain its leadership position, adapting innovative approaches without compromising the quality of its iconic projects.
