Battlefield 6 Developers Reveal Advantages of Frostbite Engine Over Unreal Engine 5
Battlefield 6 producer David Sirland explained in detail why DICE studio continues to use its proprietary Frostbite engine instead of switching to the popular Unreal Engine 5. According to him, the key advantage of its own technology is its unique capabilities for creating fully destructible environments, which is the hallmark of the Battlefield series. Frostbite was originally developed specifically for these purposes, while implementing such capabilities on Unreal Engine 5 would require significant modifications to someone else's software.

Sirland emphasized that the EA development team has a deep understanding of Frostbite's capabilities, which allows it to use its potential to the maximum. While many studios, including CD Projekt RED, are switching to Unreal Engine due to its versatility and ease of hiring specialists, the creators of Battlefield 6 believe that a specialized solution provides unrivaled quality of environmental destructibility, which cannot be achieved on a standard engine without serious modifications. This approach allows DICE to maintain a unique gaming experience that distinguishes the Battlefield franchise from other shooters on the market.
