The new Resident Evil film adaptation will become part of the gaming canon.
Video game adaptations rarely adhere to their source material, but the upcoming Resident Evil film promises to break that rule. Director Zach Cregger, known for the horror films Barbarian and Guns, stated that his film will be integrated into the franchise's canon and seamlessly complement the existing story, particularly within the context of the events of Resident Evil 2.

Instead of retelling familiar plots and introducing popular characters like Leon Kennedy, Cregger plans to introduce entirely new characters. He emphasizes that the film will stand alone while remaining true to the spirit of the original series.
Filming begins in October in Prague, with a world premiere scheduled for September 18, 2026.
