Dan Houser explains why Bully 2 never came out.
Rockstar Games was once known for its regular high-profile releases, but after Grand Theft Auto V, the company noticeably slowed down and focused on several key franchises. In a recent interview with IGN, studio co-founder Dan Houser, now head of Absurd Ventures, explained the reasons why a Bully sequel never saw the light of day.
Responding to questions at LA Comic Con, Houser admitted that he considers Red Dead Redemption the best work of his career, praising its cohesiveness, emotional depth, and unique approach to open-world storytelling. He also touched on Bully 2, which has remained one of the most anticipated games for many years. According to him, the main problem was a lack of resources: a limited number of executives and creative specialists prevented them from simultaneously managing several large-scale projects.

Rumors about Bully 2 have been circulating for over fifteen years. According to insiders, the game was planned to feature a morality system similar to the one later introduced in Red Dead Redemption. In 2021, journalist Tom Henderson claimed the studio had even prepared a playable version and was planning to showcase the project at The Game Awards, but an announcement never materialized.
Houser also expressed confidence in the future of Grand Theft Auto VI and emphasized his belief in Rockstar's ability to deliver another outstanding title.
