The script for a film based on Sleeping Dogs starring Simu Liu is ready; the project is looking for producers.
Simu Liu, known for his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, announced that the draft script for a film based on the video game Sleeping Dogs has been completed. The actor shared this news on his social media, posting a photo of the script's title page, dated October 3, 2025.
It is still unknown who exactly adapted the plot of the popular action game from United Front Games and Square Enix for the big screen. Simu Liu noted that reaching an agreement with a publisher was not difficult, but convincing major film studios to finance the project was much more difficult. The filmmakers are currently seeking a company willing to invest in the production.

The new film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs was announced in February 2025. Simu Liu will not only star in the film but also serve as one of the producers. The screenwriter and director have already been selected, but their names are currently being kept under wraps.
Interestingly, the project's announcement came shortly after actor Donnie Yen announced the final cancellation of the previous version of the film, which had been in development since 2017. The new team, it seems, has decided to start from scratch.
The original Sleeping Dogs game was released in 2012 and told the story of Wei Shen, a Hong Kong police officer working undercover in a criminal organization. Later, in 2014, the game was re-released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. United Front Games also attempted to develop the universe in the online project Triad Wars, but it never saw the light of day. The developers were finally shut down in 2016.
