Five Nights at Freddy's 2 opened to strong box office receipts
The sequel to the successful video game franchise, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, posted impressive financial results during its opening weekend. The film grossed $63 million domestically in the US and $109 million worldwide, making it the second-best opening of the year for a Blumhouse horror project. However, the sequel fell slightly short of the first installment, which earned $78 million and $130 million, respectively, during the same period.
The production budget for the second installment was 2.5 times that of the original film, accompanied by a massive promotional campaign featuring trailers during key NFL, NBA, and WWE sporting events. In a symbolic gesture, studio head Jason Blum appeared dressed as an animatronic bear at the trailer presentation at CinemaCon. Despite a more modest opening than the first installment, the project has already recouped its production costs, so a third installment in the horror film series could only be a matter of time.
