Valve has demanded a name change for the fan-made Team Fortress 2 Classic mod
The Team Fortress 2 community continues to actively support the iconic shooter, creating both nostalgic and entirely new projects. Valve typically takes a relaxed approach to such initiatives, but this time the company stepped in and took notice of one of the most well-known fan mods.
A team of enthusiasts working on a large-scale modification of Team Fortress 2 Classic announced a forced name change. The reason for the change was a warning from Valve, which reminded them that, starting in September 2024, the use of names that could be too similar to official company products is prohibited. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Valve itself had previously released a project with the same name. As a result, the developers were forced to abandon the previous name and choose a new one while maintaining the recognizability of the concept. The mod will now be known as Team Fortress 2 Classified.

However, the project is far from simply returning to earlier versions of the game with a minimal set of weapons and a lack of cosmetic items. The mod's creators have restored a significant amount of content that was cut or abandoned during the original shooter's development. The mod now features alternative modes, including escort missions with a civilian character, four-team matches, jump platforms, additional weapon options, and other elements that expand on the familiar gameplay.
The mod was originally planned for release in late 2025, but the release date has now been changed. Players will be able to experience the updated and classic version of Team Fortress 2 on January 30th.
