The legendary DOOM launched directly on headphones
The cult shooter DOOM has once again demonstrated its versatility by running on a completely unexpected platform. This time, the experiment was conducted by a developer nicknamed arin-s, who adapted the game for the PineBuds Pro wireless headphones, known for their open-source firmware.
According to the enthusiast, the open-source nature of the code was the key factor in bringing this project to fruition. The PineBuds Pro are equipped with a processor powerful enough to run DOOM after some tweaks. The developer increased the CPU frequency to 300 MHz and disabled power-saving mode, ensuring sufficient performance for the game to run smoothly.

Since the headphones lack a screen, the image was output via a connected smartphone. In this configuration, DOOM delivered performance of approximately 18 frames per second, which is considered impressive for such an unusual device.
The author has made the source files for the project, called DOOMBuds, and a gameplay example publicly available on GitHub.
