Return to Silent Hill was a box office flop and became the worst-performing film in the series

Konami has been trying to revive interest in the Silent Hill brand for years, but the latest attempt has proven to be a painful one. The third film based on the cult horror series, Return to Silent Hill, was released in the US and immediately had a disappointing start.

The film only grossed about $3 million in its opening weekend in the US, setting a record for a film adaptation of the franchise. By comparison, the original Silent Hill earned $20 million in the same period, and even the disastrous sequel Silent Hill: Resurrection managed to reach $8 million. The situation looks slightly better in Europe and Asia, but even there the film hasn't come close to breaking even on its $23 million budget.

The failure of Christophe Gans's film is especially notable for the success of another weekend release, Timur Bekmambetov's "Mercy", which grossed $11.2 million and managed to knock "Avatar: Fire and Ash" off the top spot after holding the top spot for five consecutive weeks.

Critics also gave "Return to Silent Hill" a lukewarm reception, calling it bland, overstuffed, and lacking any coherent artistic direction, further cementing its status as one of the weakest films in the franchise's history.
