id Software employees support a terminally ill DOOM fan

A touching story from a DOOM series fan has resonated widely in the gaming community and among developers. Reddit user Wanderingreader123 shared that he has been battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma since 2022, but his prognosis has now become grim. A Toronto hospital, hoping to ease his pain, offered to grant him one last wish.

The gamer, a huge fan of the franchise, requested to play the upcoming DOOM: The Dark Ages, as he was unable to afford it due to his illness and financial difficulties. The hospital complied with his request, installing a TV, a PlayStation 5 console, and a copy of the game in his room. In his post, the user expressed deep gratitude to the developers for the experience the game provided.

Key figures at id Software responded to this story. Game director Hugo Martin stated that the entire team salutes the fan and called him a true DOOM Slayer, the embodiment of strength and courage. Original DOOM creator John Romero wrote that he was deeply touched, noting that players like him are the reason the series exists, and their struggle gives the developers' work special meaning.

Representatives from publisher Bethesda also promised to support the fan during this difficult situation. Numerous words of encouragement and wishes of strength came from other social media users.
