Pirates of the Caribbean director reveals details of the cancelled BioShock film adaptation

Hollywood director Gore Verbinski, known for the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, shared details about his cancelled project to adapt the cult video game BioShock. The film was in development at Universal Studios, but was scrapped in pre-production.

Verbinski explained that he planned to deeply explore the psychological aspects of the plot, focusing on the Oedipus complex, the history of the Little Sisters, and the protagonist's moral choices. Together with screenwriter John Logan, they developed a script that included both possible endings of the original game and intended to strictly adhere to the R rating to preserve the original's dark atmosphere.

The director also noted that promising concept art had already been created, visualizing key characters such as Big Daddies and a unique Art Deco-style underwater setting. However, despite these ambitious plans, the film was never made.

Nevertheless, the idea of a BioShock film adaptation remains relevant in Hollywood. In 2022, the rights to the franchise were acquired by the streaming service Netflix, which commissioned the new project from director Francis Lawrence. Filming is expected to begin after his work on The Hunger Games: Dawn of Harvest is completed.
