Toyota unveiled its own game engine, Fluorite

Toyota's digital division has developed the Fluorite graphics engine for use in in-car multimedia systems. The project was designed to take advantage of the limited computing resources of automotive electronics, which often perform worse than even modern smartphones. Despite this, the engine supports advanced graphics APIs, including Vulkan, and enables 3D graphics comparable in quality to console-based projects.

The initial goal of Fluorite was to develop 3D user interfaces for automobiles. The company considered using off-the-shelf commercial solutions, such as Unity, but abandoned this idea due to the high resource requirements, licensing restrictions, and associated costs. As a result, a strategic decision was made to create its own lightweight tool.

Notably, Toyota intends to distribute Fluorite as an open-source project. While the company itself doesn't actively pursue gaming, the open model allows third-party developers and enthusiasts to adapt the engine for their own purposes. This opens the door to creating games and apps targeted at automotive multimedia platforms.
