The BioShock movie will be released simultaneously with the new game

Producer Roy Lee revealed new details about the progress of the film adaptation of the cult shooter BioShock, which is being prepared for release on the streaming service Netflix. According to him, the online cinema and Take-Two Interactive, which owns the rights to the franchise, made an unusual strategic decision: to release the film and the new game in the series simultaneously. This explains the lengthy preparatory period, which has already stretched out over several years.

The main reason for the constant delays is the busy schedule of director Francis Lawrence, known for such films as I Am Legend, Constantine, and several Hunger Games films. Recently, the director has been completely absorbed by other projects: first, he worked on the film adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Long Walk, and is now completing post-production on the new Hunger Games prequel, Harvest Dawn. Lee confirmed that Lawrence will be able to return to work on BioShock only by September 2026, after fulfilling all current commitments.

Based on this schedule, full production on the film is tentatively scheduled for 2027, although the producer cautions against possible adjustments. The strategy of releasing it simultaneously with the new game seems logical: it will maximize audience interest and create a powerful cross-media effect. The fourth BioShock game is being developed by Cloud Chamber, and its 2027 release date is looking increasingly realistic, although no official release date has yet been confirmed.
