Ubisoft Toronto is cutting staff, but the Splinter Cell remake is still in development
Ubisoft announced a new round of layoffs at its Canadian studio in Toronto. Forty employees, representing approximately eight percent of the studio's total workforce, were laid off. In an official letter to the team, the publisher emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly and promised those laid off expanded compensation packages and assistance with future employment.
Despite the personnel changes, Ubisoft Toronto will continue to perform its core functions, including supporting other divisions of the company. The most pressing concern for fans of classic stealth action games: work on the remake of the original Splinter Cell, announced back in December 2021, is still ongoing. The updated version of the iconic game is being developed using the Snowdrop engine, known from The Division, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Since the announcement, information about the remake has been extremely limited. All that is known is that the developers plan not only to modernize the graphics but also to rework the gameplay and partially rewrite the story to bring it into line with modern standards. In early December 2025, news broke that David Grivel, who had already led development during the initial stages from November 2021 to October 2022, had returned to lead the project. Now, with his return, fans have hope that the long-running project will finally move forward and receive its long-awaited release.
