Todd Howard convinced the Fallout writers to leave New Vegas out of the first season to maintain suspense

Fallout executive producer and head of Bethesda Game Studios Todd Howard revealed details of the creative discussions leading up to the show's release on Amazon. In an interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast, he revealed that the writers had originally planned to send the characters to the iconic New Vegas in the first season, but it was Howard who insisted on saving the location for later.

According to the producer, he explained to the team that Sin City is such an iconic location in the Fallout universe that its introduction required significant preparation. It was essential to first lay a solid narrative foundation, introduce viewers to the world and characters, and only then lead them to New Vegas. This strategy, Howard believed, would avoid disappointing fans and not undermine the original canon of the iconic game Fallout: New Vegas.

The show's creators approached the adaptation with particular care, recognizing that they were working with material with multiple endings and strong characters. They spent a great deal of time ensuring that nothing was contradicted from the games' events, while still giving the writers enough freedom to move forward. However, even with this cautious approach, retcons still occurred: the Enclave, which had long since ceased to exist in New Vegas lore, was reintroduced as the main antagonist, and the depiction of the Brotherhood of Steel raised questions among many viewers. Nevertheless, the series has been renewed for a third season, with filming set to begin this spring.
