Schreier confirmed: Marvel's Wolverine will remain a PlayStation 5 exclusive despite its contract with Marvel

Renowned Bloomberg gaming journalist Jason Schreier has completely dashed PC gamers' hopes for the long-awaited Marvel's Wolverine action game to hit PCs. In the discussion that followed his recent announcement of Sony's shift in strategy, he confirmed that the company's decision applies to all major single-player projects, including the game from Insomniac Games, despite rumors circulating online to the contrary.

The speculation stemmed from documents leaked during a massive hacker attack on Insomniac Games in late 2023. According to these materials, Sony's contractual obligations to Marvel for the X-Men universe apparently stipulated that games would be released on PC until at least 2035. One user suggested that this could force the Japanese corporation to make an exception for Wolverine, but Schreier firmly refuted these hopes.

The journalist quoted verbatim from his previous publication, in which he clearly stated that Sony Group Corp. no longer intends to release major PS5 titles on PC, specifying that this applies specifically to single-player projects and does not extend to games-as-a-service. Therefore, no contractual nuances will force the company to abandon the protection of its main asset—the PlayStation ecosystem.

There are several reasons for this decisive turnaround. Sony management concluded that continuing to release exclusives on other platforms dilutes the brand and negatively impacts console sales. Furthermore, revenue from recent ports has proven to be quite insignificant—according to some estimates, it accounts for only about 1.5 percent of the gaming division's total revenue. Schreier himself believes that rumors of Microsoft's plans to release a new Windows-based Xbox capable of playing games from third-party stores also influenced the decision. In this situation, the availability of PC versions of exclusive titles would automatically make them available on a competing platform, something Sony absolutely cannot allow.

Therefore, Marvel's Wolverine, scheduled for release on September 15, will remain a full-fledged console exclusive, and anyone wishing to try the game will have to get a PlayStation 5.
